Balancing Fun and Learning in Second Grade

,

We are officially three weeks into the school year! Second grade is going so well and I’m thrilled with how it’s been working out. Here’s what we are using:

Math: We are once again using The Good and the Beautiful’s math program, level 2. In addition to this we use Khan academy’s free app for an occasional fun practice game and a Mind Benders logic puzzle book.

Language Arts: The Good and the Beautiful again here, level 2. My daughter is a bit ahead in this area, so we are doing two lessons a day and skipping the booster cards, as she is already an avid reader. In addition to this, she does a literary log once a week, handwriting practice, and reads from a curated list that I make for her. We also do several read-alouds as a family.

History: We are working our way through Gather ‘Round’s American History units. Currently we are on Unit 2 and we do one lesson a day. We also touch on a lot of history in our morning time curriculum and via our literature.

Science: We are a part of a science co-op this semester. We are doing weather around the world with that group, and in addition to that, The Good and the Beautiful’s Sparks and Stars Unit once a week. We also watch a Wild Kratts episode intentionally every week for animal science. It’s such a great resource!

Extra-Curricular: She is doing basketball this semester through i9, piano daily, art via me, and all that our morning time encompasses.

So far it’s going well. I am interested in adding a more robust Spanish program for her and maybe work in some coding games. All in all, I feel good about her workload. She has time to play outside and be a kid, plus lots of free time to read and draw and play with her siblings. We spend 2-3 hours daily on school, and that seems about right.

About Me

Hello friend, my name is Katie and pizza is my favorite food. Yes, I’m in my thirties and yes, I have three daughters that I’m raising and homeschooling and nagging, but I think you’d be most interested to know that I would eat pizza for every meal of every day and never complain. There was a brief time (ages 8-11) when I thought that mashed potatoes was my favorite food, but I’ve since come around. That being said, I don’t only talk about pizza. Here you will find slices of homeschooling life, home decor, cooking, musings, and an occasional funny meme. In fact, I think you will find a shocking lack of pizza content as a whole, but now you know the truth: Pizza is always close to mind.
