We aren’t raising ipad kids. Our children don’t have devices and they have little access to television day to day. There have been seasons of more or less screen time, but as my motherhood journey flows along, I’ve come to place where the leagalism of screens is just really less and less a big deal to me. The overall culture of our home is one of learning and creation and curiosity. When screens add to that culture, I’m happy to add them in. When we learned about George Washington last week, it was helpful to watch a short video tour of his historic home. When we discussed tornados in our science co-op, I played a video showing a massive tornado to really hit home the power that the funneling winds harness. Screens are a tool, not a lifestyle. Today I wanted to muse a little about the best way to watch tv: together!
There’s something magical about curling up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn, snuggled in blankets, ready to dive into a movie with your kids. As a mom, these moments are more than just entertainment; they’re an opportunity to bond, share laughter, and create lasting memories. Here are some takeaways I’ve been percolating on.
Quality Time That Counts
In our busy lives, finding quality time with our kids can feel like a challenge. Between school, activities, and the endless to-do lists, cozy movie nights become a cherished escape. It’s a simple way to slow down, put the world on pause, and just enjoy each other’s company. Whether it’s a classic animated film or the latest family adventure, being together in those moments creates a sense of togetherness that’s hard to replicate.
Conversations that Flow
Movies can spark some of the best conversations! After the credits roll, you can chat about the characters, their choices, and what everyone thought of the ending. Did the hero make the right decision? What would they have done differently? These discussions allow you to connect on a deeper level and gain insights into your kids’ thoughts and feelings. Plus, it’s a chance to share your own experiences and values in a way that feels natural and fun.
Learning Through Stories
Movies are powerful storytellers, often packed with valuable lessons. From friendship and bravery to kindness and perseverance, films can convey important messages in an engaging way. Watching these stories unfold together allows you to discuss themes and morals in a relatable context. It’s a gentle way to teach life lessons without the pressure of a formal lesson.
Creating Rituals and Traditions
My favorite reason to have a movie night: tradition establishment! When you make movie nights a regular thing—maybe Friday is “Family Movie Night”—you establish a cozy ritual that your kids will cherish. These traditions create a sense of security and belonging. As they grow, they’ll look back fondly on those evenings spent together, and it’ll be something they want to carry into their own families someday.
A Cozy Space for Comfort
Sometimes, all a child needs is a little comfort. Movie nights can provide that cozy haven where they feel safe and loved. It’s a space to cuddle up, maybe even fall asleep on your shoulder, and know that they’re exactly where they belong. These intimate moments foster trust and closeness, reminding them that home is a place filled with warmth and love.
These simple movie nights are not just about watching a film; they’re about creating connections, sharing experiences, and building a treasure trove of memories that you’ll all cherish for years to come.
