A Day in Our Homeschool Life: Breakfast to Bedtime

,

Hello, friends! Today is a glimpse into a typical homeschool day for us, starting off with a good breakfast. We do yogurt bowls pretty much weekly. This day we had pecans, bananas, and blueberries on top of plain whole milk yogurt.

During breakfast, we do morning time, starting with the Bible. Even if we weren’t homeschooling, this would be a staple in our home. Currently, we are reading through Matthew and working our way through the New City Catechism for Kids. This Explorer Bible is great and has lots of extension activities/QR codes for videos.

We rotate what we do next for morning time. Sometimes we read from our Historical Heroes book, talk about a composer or artist, or simply do our read-aloud. Today we did our weekly poem. At the beginning of the year, we all put topics in a jar and we draw one out once a week to use as the subject for a (usually silly) poem we write together.

After breakfast/morning time, the kids get dressed for the day, brush their teeth, and make their beds. Then they have free time to do what they want until about 9 o’clock. During that time I will start some laundry, take time to myself, work on this blog a bit, or just putter around cleaning. I also like to get their daily lists made and up on the fridge.

I started with my second-grader today doing her individual subjects. We did math and language arts wit plenty of help from her little sister (ha!). She also had a spelling test today.

As that is happening, I set my kindergartener up with her online piano lesson via Hoffman Academy.

This is how I organize my day. I write what I hope to achieve in pencil (VERY important), and highlight it once it’s finished. If we don’t get to something, I can erase it and move it to another day.

Then we swap out and I do kinder individual subjects (math, reading, language arts) while my second-grader works on some of her independent task and the toddler was luckily happy to draw on a dry-erase board.

I assign the girls a book to read every week and they are responsible for finishing it. Then, once a week they do a literary log. The assignment is two good sentences with a full color picture of a scene from the book. They can also choose to do their lit log on a section of our current read-aloud. This is a precious keepsake to me and goes back for years. It’s fun to see them grow in skill. During the pre-k/kinder years, they dictate to me what the sentences will say.

The night before this day, we did our weekly history lesson. This video was recommended to go along with it. It was fascinating!

On the expedition, one of the animals they saw for the first time was a grizzly bear, so we did a quick art lesson with that as a theme. It was cute and simple.

Next up was piano time for my other student. I love her quirky sense of style. It’s so fun to watch these kids grow up and unfold into who God has planned for them.

Our school day is over by lunch most days, but I guess you could technically include our bedtime read-aloud with Dad as part of the school day, because it is very intentionally done. He is currently reading The Long Winter to us all, and it’s my favorite part of the day.

The days are full but slow and I love it. Now we rest up for tomorrow.

About Me

Hello friend, my name is Katie and pizza is my favorite food. Yes, I’m in my thirties and yes, I have three daughters that I’m raising and homeschooling and nagging, but I think you’d be most interested to know that I would eat pizza for every meal of every day and never complain. There was a brief time (ages 8-11) when I thought that mashed potatoes was my favorite food, but I’ve since come around. That being said, I don’t only talk about pizza. Here you will find slices of homeschooling life, home decor, cooking, musings, and an occasional funny meme. In fact, I think you will find a shocking lack of pizza content as a whole, but now you know the truth: Pizza is always close to mind.
