Here’s what we were up to last week.
We were coming off an action-packed weekend, so we took Monday a little slow. Our day started with breakfast and Bible study, followed by all of our core subjects and a little piano practice. As always, we did our Monday poetry and got in plenty of read-aloud and independent reading.
Right now, we’re reading two books aloud: Kiki’s Delivery Service by Eiko Kadono and Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. My fourth grader’s independent book for the week was Restart by Gordon Korman, while my second grader read Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling C. Holling. For my preschooler, we read several books together and made homemade playdough. She also attends preschool at our church two days a week.
Tuesday was Science Co-op Day, so we headed to a local lake to learn about rocks. The kids put vinegar on different rocks to see how they would react, and we talked about how rocks are formed and why their composition matters. They had plenty of time to play with the other kids and we had a picnic lunch. We also squeezed in Language Arts and Math, once we got back home.
Wednesday was a little special because my mom came over to teach the girls embroidery and sewing. They’re currently working on making 16-inch dolls with embroidered faces, which has been such a fun project for them. We also did Math and Language Arts and spent about 20 minutes at the piano.
Thursday looked a lot like Monday. We’ve been learning about the Roanoke Colony in history, and it has completely captured all of our interest. There’s just something about a mysterious lost colony that makes history especially fun! One of my girls also had a Language Arts unit exam.
Friday is normally our no-school day, but my fourth grader hadn’t quite finished her book for the week, so she finished reading Restart and completed her literary log.
And that was our week! Nothing particularly flashy, but a good mix of academics, books, music, sewing, science, and time together, which is pretty much what I’m hoping for in our homeschool.
